ADVANCING THE ARMY’S MISSION THROUGH MUSIC.

Our Mission

UNITING COMMUNITIES.

INSPIRING SOLDIERS.

ENSURING READINESS.

UNITING COMMUNITIES.

The 338th practices musical excellence and offers free public performances to unite communities around American and military music traditions. Parades, community events, and more encourage Americans to support The Army’s mission as it seeks to fight and win our nation’s wars.

INSPIRING SOLDIERS.

The Army understands that its most essential asset is the soldiers, who make up its organization. The 338th is honored to enjoy the opportunity to participate in various events to support fellow soldiers. We participate in ceremonies, family days, funerals, and much more.

ENSURING READINESS.

The Army Reserve is Ready Now, meaning we maintain a strong focus on always being ready for any mission when called to the task. The soldiers of the 338th are more than musicians, they are soldiers first. We are fully trained to Army weapons standards, focus on physical training, and more.

OUR HISTORY.

1943: The 338th Army Band was originally formed in 1943 at Camp Siebert, Alabama as part of a support group for General Patton’s 3rd Army in Europe. The band was deactivated before overseas deployment in 1945.

1952: The 338th was reactivated in 1952 as part of the U.S. 2nd Army. Later, the 338th became part of the XXth Corps of the 1st US Army.

1967: In 1967, the band was reassigned to the 83rd Army Reserve Command at Ft. Hayes, Columbus, Ohio.

1995: In September of 1995, the 338th was transferred to the 88th Reserve Support Command with headquarters at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. Subsequently, that command became the 88th Regional Support Command and then the 88th Regional Readiness Command.

2007: In October of 2007, the band was reassigned to the 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) headquartered in Indianapolis.

OUR FUTURE.

The future is bright for the 338th Army Band. We have had the honor of serving in various environments around the world. Whether we are serving here at home by inspiring our fellow soldiers, building relationships with members of our community, or traveling abroad to train and perform, we are always striving to advance the Army’s mission.

Army Bands have had a rich tradition of serving our nation in every major conflict and in peacetime since the founding of the United States of America. We believe music serves as a unique bridge to cultures and societies and can aid in opening doors to diplomacy where none seem to exist. Army Bands across the organization stand ready to support the Army and defend the freedoms of the American public at all times.

Army musicians are uniquely trusted to both serve as fully qualified soldiers and act as liaisons to the greater American community. By being ready to defend the nation and also able to support the Army’s mission to fight and win our nation’s wars, Army musicians will continue to support the Army mission well into the future.

JOIN THE BAND.

Are you interested in joining the 338th Army Band? Discover the difference the U.S. Army can make in your life and help you be all you can be.

The 338th Army Band is attached to the 88th Readiness Division and is one of the 17 U.S. Army Reserve Component bands across the nation. Each of our soldiers is fully trained and qualified both as a Soldier and specifically in their Military Occupational Speciality (MOS) as a musician. We have soldiers who have come from Active Duty service, other branches, and enlisted directly into the U.S. Army Reserves.

HOW DO I JOIN?

To join, you must pass an Army Musical Proficiency Assessment (audition) with our commander. We ask you first speak to a recruiter who can help you begin the joining process. You will need to start the process at MEPS before auditioning for the unit*. You may inquire about open positions available for audition at any time. Simply contact our admin office for assistance.

For current service members, contact our admin team for more information on joining our unit.

*While starting with a recruiter is preferred, exceptions can be made to audition for the 338th Army Band before you speak to a recruiter. Our unit administrator can help guide you in the right direction.

I PASSED MY AUDITION, WHAT'S NEXT?

Each of our soldiers is fully trained and fully qualified as a soldier first and an Army musician second. This means that you will be required to attend 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training (BCT) where you will receive training on Army Doctrine, Army Life, Physical Readiness Training, and pass weapons qualifications. It is required that you pass the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) to graduate from Basic Combat Training.

Once you graduate from BCT, you will continue on to Advanced Individual Training (AIT) for a 10 week course. This course will prepare you to be fully MOS (Military Occupational Speciality) qualified as a U.S. Army Musician (42R) on your auditioned instrument. School of music instruction builds upon your knowledge as a soldier through further training on Warrior Tasks & Battle Drills, additional Physical Readiness Training, and instruction on Army Music and the doctrine of U.S. Army Bands. It is also a requirement to pass an ACFT to graduate from AIT.

COMMITMENTS & BENEFITS SERVING IN THE U.S. Army RESERVE?

Service in the U.S. Army Reserve allows soldiers to grow in their U.S. Army career in addition to pursuing their civilian career. Battle Assemblies (drill weekends) are held once a month, with a two-week annual training conducted typically in the summer months.

The 338th conducts several missions outside of this regular schedule but these are typically volunteer and availability-based rather than a hard-requirement. We perform missions across OH, MI, and the greater mid-west region.

Reservists enjoy many great benefits such as affordable health, dental, and vision insurance, access to military installation Post Exchanges, Commisaries, Physical Fitness Centers, participation in DOD benefits sites like “American Forces Travel”, and much more.

Army Musicians enlist in the U.S. Army as an E-4, or “Specialist” as a part of the Civilian Aquired Skills program.
